The next most posed question can be asked a multitude of ways, “Why would you like to work for us?” or “What do you know about us?” or even “What interests you most about this role?”
This is a golden opportunity to stand out from others you are competing with. And let’s be clear a recruitment process is a competition. Too many people approach this question from the wrong angle, thinking “If I can show how appropriate my experience is, the job will be mine!” That would be lovely, however rarely is the case as you are not taking into consideration those who you are competing with. If you are against someone who has similar academics and experience to yours, you have to find a different way to stand out. Prepare more, show a better understanding of the industry/company and that could secure the position for you.
When you are preparing for this question, you have to research the company. What are their values? Who are their customers? What awards have they won, and what are they really great at? Because, let’s face it, who wants to work for someone who isn’t great at something!
The reality may be that they are a direct competitor to your current employer and they are paying €5k more! And although that is a very common situation, giving the honest answer would make you stand out for the wrong reason!
Too many times, I have heard this question answered in the following way: “You’re a multinational that are growing and I have heard you’re a really great place to work. I’m looking for somewhere to build my career, and I think that’s with you.” It sounds fine, but you really could use this answer about all the multinationals in Ireland. There is nothing specific to any company in this answer, there is nothing making you stand out in this answer. And ultimately you have missed the opportunity to show your potential new employer that when it comes to you, they won’t just have another ‘run of the mill’ employee.
So, the next time you are asked this question, be able to stand out by answering using actual facts that display why you feel they would be an attractive employer specifically for you. If you’ve practiced your answer, it will mean you don’t forget an important point and kick yourself later and will avoid that rambling that happens when you don’t know if you’ve answered the question satisfactorily. It could be the difference between you or your competitor getting the job!
